Energy monitoring of Palma's public lighting

Between 2020 and 2025, SACI has participated in the modernisation of the electrical infrastructure of Palma City Council through the installation of over 1,600 SAM3001 network analysers en 496 municipal electrical panels. The project has enabled the digitisation of energy control for public lighting and other urban services, providing real-time information to optimise electricity consumption, improve maintenance, and facilitate more efficient management of municipal infrastructure.

The challenge

The Palma City Council needed to monitor the electricity consumption of its public lighting network from a centralised platform. The main difficulty was the limited space available in the existing electrical cabinets, which required a compact, precise, and easily integrable solution with the municipal control system.

The solution

SACI supplied and integrated more than 1,600 SAM3001 analysers, a team designed for energy monitoring applications where space is a determining factor.

Thanks to its compact format and communications RS485 Modbus RTU, the SAM3001 was integrated with the PLC developed for the Town Hall, allowing electrical information to be centralised on the municipal management platform.

In addition to recording electrical consumptions, the equipment provides information on grid quality, including harmonics, THD, imbalances, overvoltages, and voltage sags.

Results

The solution has transformed municipal electrical panels into smart nodes capable of monitoring the network's energy behaviour in real time.

Following the successful deployment in public lighting, the system was extended to other urban services, such as traffic lights, public bike systems and information shelters, consolidating an energy monitoring platform ready for future expansions.

Why the SAM3001?

The SAM3001 It was the chosen solution due to its ability to combine a high measurement density with a compact design, facilitating its installation in electrical panels with limited space. Its integration capability with energy management platforms and Smart City systems makes it an ideal solution for urban infrastructure, industrial, and public building projects.
