networks without neutral: what they are and what analyzers are compatible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Three-phase networks without neutral<\/strong> also known as networks <strong>3P3W or 3 wires<\/strong>are a type of electrical installation where only the three phases are available, without a neutral conductor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although they often go unnoticed, these types of networks are still very common in numerous industrial and energy environments, which is why it is essential to use measuring equipment specifically prepared for this type of configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where are three-phase networks without neutral used?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3-phase 3-wire configurations are especially common in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Industrial facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motors and three-phase loads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MV\/LV distribution networks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Naval systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Old electrical panels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>International applications (especially in the USA and heavy industry)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this type of installation, there is no neutral reference, so electrical measurements are taken directly between phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the differences between a 3P3W network and a 3P4W network?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a three-phase network with neutral (3P4W), equipment can measure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Phase-to-phase voltages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phase-neutral voltages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Currents per phase<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imbalances with respect to neutral<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in a three-phase network without a neutral:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Phase-to-neutral voltages cannot be measured.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The voltage reference is taken only between phases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The analyser or counter must be specifically prepared for 3P3W configuration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, depending on the type of installation, 2 different measurement methods can be used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aron method, or 2-element method<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3-element method<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, not all devices on the market work correctly on these types of networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common problems in incompatible devices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many basic analyzers and meters are designed only for networks with neutral, or 3P4W, which can cause problems in 3P3W installations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Neutral for power supply required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incorrect voltage readings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of energy measurement accuracy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impossibility of calculating certain variables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limitations in monitoring and alarms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Errors in old or international industrial installations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In critical applications, this can translate into
