The Sarmiento de Gamboa Oceanographic Vessel is a Spanish Multipurpose Oceanographic Research vessel operated by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). It takes its name from Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, Spanish navigator of the sixteenth century. It has an overall length of 70.5 meters, a beam of 15.5 meters and is powered by diesel and electric engines. The Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Marítima, also known by the acronym SASEMAR or unofficially as Salvamento Marítimo, is a public business entity in charge of maritime safety in Spanish waters. SACI, through its collaboration with the shipyards that manufacture these ships, has supplied specific instrumentation for the panels of the ships with DNV certificate.
