The Oceanographic Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa is a Spanish Multipurpose Oceanographic Research Vessel operated by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). It takes its name from Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, a 16th century Spanish navigator. It has an overall length of 70.5 metres, a beam of 15.5 metres and is propelled by diesel and electric engines. The Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Marítima, also known by the acronym SASEMAR or unofficially as Salvamento Marítimo, is a public business entity in charge of maritime safety in Spanish waters. SACI, through its collaboration with the shipyards that manufacture these vessels, has supplied specific instrumentation for the DNV-certified ship's switchboards.
